I've since noticed that it is generally isn't that windy which explains why there were always far more watermills than windmills, the use of millponds allowing year round production.

Apparently millers had quite a bad reputation down through the ages. They often had two sets of scales, one to weigh the wheat/barley coming in and another for the flour coming out and always in the miller's favour. Often just a one man operation they were regarded as the local 'fixer' in the area.

In some cases even local hand mills were confiscated so the only option was to use the 'official' miller.

Chaucer's 'The Reeve's Tale" is less than complimentary about millers and probably reveals, to a degree, the contemporary view of the job.Ubique Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04595735455445658424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-583763956832861153.post-13343498155061479942015-04-08T11:11:03.216+01:002015-04-08T11:11:03.216+01:00Thanks Sam.Thanks Sam.Ubique Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04595735455445658424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-583763956832861153.post-11367226250755504252015-04-08T11:10:28.520+01:002015-04-08T11:10:28.520+01:00Cheers nobby.Cheers nobby.Ubique Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04595735455445658424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-583763956832861153.post-74620471319148461502015-04-08T11:10:16.627+01:002015-04-08T11:10:16.627+01:00Thanks Peter, on a smaller scale project individua...Thanks Peter, on a smaller scale project individual roof tiles are the way to go, worth the effort.Ubique Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04595735455445658424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-583763956832861153.post-63617275890921364952015-04-08T11:07:03.677+01:002015-04-08T11:07:03.677+01:00Cheers Jonathan.Cheers Jonathan.Ubique Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04595735455445658424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-583763956832861153.post-61693921672079059202015-04-08T11:06:43.144+01:002015-04-08T11:06:43.144+01:00Thanks Kurtus. Thanks Kurtus.Ubique Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04595735455445658424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-583763956832861153.post-14529363709794949332015-04-08T11:06:23.134+01:002015-04-08T11:06:23.134+01:00Thank you Phil.Thank you Phil.Ubique Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04595735455445658424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-583763956832861153.post-34433531132613709602015-04-08T10:15:43.265+01:002015-04-08T10:15:43.265+01:00Great-looking model Matt, you should be proud!
I&...Great-looking model Matt, you should be proud!

I'm not sure about the 'couple of months work' bit though. A number of lords built windmills (and water mills) to fleece their tenants that bit more, so they must have been profitable. Millers are usually the wealthier people in communities too... so either they worked damn hard in those couple of months, or they operated over longer periods.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-583763956832861153.post-39379018687195893742015-04-07T16:33:11.590+01:002015-04-07T16:33:11.590+01:00Great work again !
